Technology-driven changes in the healthcare setting have been a norm in the modern tech-driven age. With new, improved technologies being invented, the healthcare industry is equally demanded to adopt the incoming technologies to address the effectiveness and quality of care being delivered (Verma & Gupta, 2017). The Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) has become an essential model in the adoption and implementation of a new system in healthcare. The participation of nurse informatics in adopting and implementing the new system is an indispensable aspect, as his active presence in each SDLC stage ensures the system would be acceptable and usable by the rest of the nurses and healthcare professionals within the organization (Louis, 2011). Adopting the role of a nurse manager, informaticist inclusion is inevitable as he would foster the identification of critical facets of the new documentation system, which aligns with the organizational needs. The SDLC model entails five significant stages in system implementation. These include; planning and requirements definition, analysis, design of the new system, performance, and finally, post-implementation support (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). While each stage entails a specific role, they are integrated and interrelated to ensure adequate system development. This paper provides a role description of a graduate-level nurse on her role in the implementation team based on the SDLC model.

Planning and requirement defining is the first stage of the SDLC model. This stage is critical as it gives the system development process a shape and direction from an idea. Regarding the proposed system (documentation system), the graduate nurse would be critical in ensuring the development team understands the needs of the organization and the target end users. According to Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (n.d.b), successful planning ensures the system’s success. The nurse informaticist helps identify the system scope, requirements, the problem being solved, and timeline determination. The nurse’s role also ensures a link between the incoming system and the organizational needs. However, lack of nurse informatics inclusion in the planning stage helps the team to miss the target solution or the intended function of the incoming team, hence not addressing the organization or nurse’s needs.

Secondly, there is the Analysis stage, which entails the system developers designing the workflow process. This allows the evaluation of the system’s potentiality to meet the earlier identified application within the organization. The primary question is whether the proposed system would be able to meet the identified system needs. The nurse participates by ensuring the functionality of the system is focused on. More so, he remembers and discusses different components of the system, such as tools and system elements that ought to be considered in the overall making of the system. The inability to adopt the informaticist expertise would result in developing a plan with workflow and processes flaws.

Designing the system is the third stage of the SDLC process and entails modeling the new documentation system based on the plan and analysis conducted. More so, the team working on the system identifies how the software will work as data and interfaces are integrated hence determining visualization. (2019), nurses are critical players in the change process as they understand essential and less essential input and output data in their nurse practice hence identifying the ‘how’ it will function of the system. Omitting nurses’ input at this stage exposes the system adoption and implementation at the risk of not capturing the correct data hence an ineffective system being developed. Vital system flaws and data would miss from the system, therefore, a flawed development process. Nurses’ participation helps the team and incoming documentation system focus on the earlier identified goals and objectives.

Next is the Implementation stage, the fourth stage in the SDLC model. The system is fully customized and installed into the hospital’s IT infrastructure at this stage. Nurses participate collaboratively in the system’s customization and testing, hence evaluating and providing feedback to the development team on the identified flaws to be collected. Failing to incorporate the nurse in the stage can result in the installation of a half based or a nonfunctional system that does not align with the organizational needs of clinical care. Finally, the nurses’ participation ensures a link between developers and users of the system, which are the nurses and other care providers. The nurse graduate would train the rest of the nurses, ensuring a successful change process and adoption of the system.

Finally, Post-Implementation is the last stage in the SDLC model. The final stage is critical as it is the evaluating stage, where the system functionality and each component are tested and ascertained to work effectively with zero flaws. The step ensures all bugs and errors are identified and addressed accordingly (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). The nurse participates by communicating any identified defects or errors of the system to the development team. More so, he (the nurse) ensures a healthy link between the developers and the system’s users by communicating between the two. Failure to include the nurses may result in adopting an approach with multiple errors or bugs, reducing the system’s quality of care and efficiency.

In conclusion, adopting the SDLC process facilitates the effective adoption and implementation of It systems within organizations. The participation of nurse informaticists in each SDLC stage proves valuable within the clinical setting as they inform not only the development process but also foster the adoption and implementation of a complete and functional system. In the provided case where the new documentation process is being adopted, the graduate would be a vital link between system development and organizational needs.
