The purpose of the information hunts & evaluations is to learn about a broad range of information resources in different formats.  Each assignment includes three (3) information hunt questions and one (1) evaluation to be completed using print and/or electronic resources.

Information Hunts

Information Hunt answers should include the source where you found the information and the answer.

For print sources, include citation information for the source as well as the title of the source that you used, the date published, and the page number on which you found the answer, and the answer itself. To get full credit for an answer, you must include the page number

For electronic sources, include citation information for the source as well as the title of the source that you used and appropriate citation information (such as the URL of the page on which you found the answer), and the answer itself. In the event that your search leads you from one source to another, include your path to the answer.

Evaluations

Do not evaluate a resource previously used to answer the information hunt questions.

For each information resource selected, you will:

  • Analyze the resource in depth.
  • Provide bibliographic information for the resource, such as the title, publication date, author/editor/producer, and publisher/URL.
  • Give an original evaluation of the resource, which includes authority, scope, and arrangement.
  • Provide your recommendation for the type(s) of user group for which this source would be appropriate and why.

Databases, Indexes, & Abstracts

Part I: Information Hunts (Questions 1-3)

Instructions: Use electronic resources to answer the following information hunt questions. A specific resource can only be used once for this assignment. 

1.  I’m interested in reading The Midnight Library by Matt Haig.  Can you find a review of this book and tell me briefly what it’s about?  Please provide the full bibliographic information for the book review.

2. A client is looking for information about the articles published by Melissa L. Rethlefsen (a graduate of the UNT Health Informatics Program).  Using Web of Science through the UNT Libraries, find out how many articles she has published, and how many times she has been cited.

3. My neighbor’s daughter is writing a paper on Falklands War.  When did the war occur?  What countries were involved? Use Credo Reference through the UNT Libraries to answer these questions.

Search Engines

Part I: Information Hunts (Questions 1-3)

Instructions: Use electronic resources to answer the following information hunt questions. A specific resource can only be used once for this assignment.

1. Search Yahoo(Links to an external site.) and Dogpile (Links to an external site.) for the phrase “hiatal hernia.”  Compare and contrast the search results.

2. Use Ask.com (Links to an external site.) to conduct two searches. First, conduct a search using the term Coronavirus. Then conduct a search using the terms corona AND virus. Compare the results of the two searches.

3. Search Google (Links to an external site.) for information on social justice and libraries.  Now repeat your search using Google Scholar (Links to an external site.)

. Compare the results of the two searches in terms of number of results and quality of resources.
