ACTIVITY NO. 41. Nature and characteristics of PBL.PBL is an instructional method in which the students work in small group to gainknowledge and acquire problem-solving skills. The first application of PBL, andperhaps the most strict and pure form of PBL, was in medical schools whichrigorously test the knowledge base of the graduates. Medical professionals need tokeep up with new information in their field, and the skill of life-long learning isparticularly important for them. Hence, PBL was thought to be well suited for thisarea.Problem based learning has several distinct characteristics which may be identifiedand utilized in designing such curriculum. These are:• Use of real world problems• Reliance on problems to drive the curriculum• The problems are truly ill-structured• It is learner-centered• PBL produces independent, life-long learners2.
